Power cut: Apocalyptic chaos in UK as trains, tubes and traffic lights are hit

A huge power cut has brought 'apocalyptic chaos' to parts of the UK - as trains, tubes and traffic lights were hit,

Train lines in London and the south east have been hit by the power failure, with Transport for London also warning traffic lights have been affected.

Airports in the city are also said to be affected by the loss of power and Kings Cross station has been evacuated.

UK Power Networks has said large parts of the country are without power due to a fault on the National Transmission Network.

Nearly a million customers faced blackouts across the country due to issues with two generators.

Elsewhere in the country, Stockport, Ellesmere Port, Liverpool, Bradford and parts of Scotland were also affected by loss of power.

UK Power Networks tweeted on Friday evening: "We're aware of a power cut affecting large parts of London and South East.

"We believe this is due to a failure on National Grid's network, which is affecting our customers."

Western Power Distribution (WPD), the electricity distribution network operator for the Midlands, South West and Wales, said there was a "major incident".

A WPD tweet said: "We are currently experiencing a major incident on the national electricity infrastructure. We are in the process of restoring customers now and will provide further updates as soon as possible for specific areas. We are sorry for the inconvenience this is causing."

A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid, which serves Yorkshire and the North East, said 110,000 of its customers lost power, while at least 26,000 people were without power in the North West of England, Electricity North West said.

Transport for London tweeted: "Due to a large scale National Grid failure there is a power cut in the London and South East areas, meaning that some traffic lights are down. Please be very cautious on the roads!"

Train services including Thameslink, Southern and the Gatwick Express are said to be down.

On a train that left Moorgate station, one passenger, Stathi Marneros, tweeting footage of people walking along the tracks after being stuck onboard.

He said: "4:30 train from Moorgate. 6:59pm and been stuck on the train between Alex Park and New Southgate.

"Train being evacuated, walking on tracks back to Alex Park."

At Clapham Junction, passengers were using torches on their phone to guide through tunnels.

Asis Green said she got trapped on a train as the doors had stopped working.

On the outage further north, Cheshire Police has said there has also been a power outage in the Ellesmere Port area, including in Great Sutton and Little Sutton.

People using escalators at train stations reported falling over as they suddenly came to a stop.

Marisa, travelling in Bradford city centre, wrote: "The escalator in the station just suddenly stopped and threw us all off."

Many drivers were taking to Twitter warning of traffic light failures as far north as Scotland.

At least 30 sets of traffic lights are affected in Glasgow.

Radio Clyde News tweeted: "At least 30 sets of traffic lights are out across Glasgow after a number of power spikes caused by the bad weather.

"@GlasgowCC say all lights will be attended and switched back on as soon as possible once the weather allows. Be careful when approaching dark traffic signals."

Police officers could be forced to man busy junctions where traffic lights have been shut down by a power cut, a spokeswoman for Transport for London has confirmed.

She said some traffic lights are "not working" but the scale of the problem is not yet known.

Police officers could be called in to "manage the busy junctions, to physically manage them themselves," she said.

"We're just assessing how many traffic signals are out."

Some of TfL's systems which control traffic lights are also "not operating", she said.
