Huge fire at industrial estate as 200 TONNES of paper goes up in flames

Fire crews are battling a huge blaze involving 200 tonnes of waste paper at an industrial estate in Wigan.

The blaze broke out on Friday evening (May 29) at Kirklees Industrial Estate in Aspull.

Residents have been urged to keep their doors and windows shut due to smoke.

Crews were called to the scene on Cale Lane just before 7pm.

In a tweet, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We have got seven pumps dealing with an incident at Kirklees Industrial Estate in Aspull, Wigan.

"The incident has caused a lot of smoke in the area - if you are local keep your doors and windows closed."

Crews will remain on scene overnight, a post on the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service website said.

In a statement, the fire service said: "Seven fire engines are currently dealing with an incident at Kirkless Industrial Estate in Wigan.

"Crew mobilised to the incident in Cale Lane at 6.55pm.

"Approximately 200 tonnes of waste paper is currently ablaze with firefighters using jets to douse the flames.

"A large amount of smoke has discharged over the local area and residents are asked to keep their doors and windows closed and avoid the area to allow our crew to work.

"While the blaze is being controlled, firefighters will remain at the scene throughout the night as they work to ensure the fire is fully extinguished."
