Home damaged by large 'explosion' leaving massive hole in rear of property

Firefighters have been called to an explosion and fire at a house.

The Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene on Whale Island Way in Portsmouth at 12:14pm.

Images from the scene show smoke pouring from the roof of a residential house.

Crews from Southsea, Cosham, Fareham and Portchester had been called, along with one from Eastleigh and an aerial ladder platform from Basingstoke.

South Central Ambulance Service was also called to the scene and tweeted their yellow response team was supporting the fire service.

Families from nearby homes have been evacuated.

The fire service confirmed two casualties were assessed as a precaution and discharged at the scene while the ambulance service treated a further casualty for minor injuries. 

An environmental protection unit has also been sent.

Police have warned people to avoid the area, tweeting: "We are assiting our colleagues at @Hants_fire to deal with a fire on Whale Island Way.

"A number of houses have been evacuated as a precation.

"We would ask you to avoid the area at this time."
