Henry Shefflin strongly linked to Galway hurling manager's job

Speculation is mounting that Henry Shefflin is in line to be named as the Galway senior hurling manager.

The 10-time All-Ireland winner was rumoured to have been in the running for the post a number of weeks ago though the frontrunners appeared to be local candidates Brian Hanley and Jeff Lynskey, along with former Waterford, Clare and Wexford boss Davy Fitzgerald, once early favourite Micheal Donoghue had pulled out.

Indeed, Fitzgerald was said to be on the brink of succeeding Shane O’Neill yesterday though those reports appear to have been premature.

And now Shefflin has come into the picture, with Kilkenny sources indicating that the 10-time All-Ireland winner will be announced as the new Tribe boss this evening.

He cut his teeth in management with his club Ballyhale Shamrocks, winning successive All-Ireland titles in 2019 and ‘20, while he took charge of intermediate outfit Thomastown last winter.

If appointed, it would represent quite the coup for Galway and, having sourced all of their managers locally after Michael ‘Babs’ Keating’s single season at the helm ended in 1979 until Ger Loughnane’s appointment 17 years later, Shefflin would be the fourth outside manager in the interim after Loughnane, John McIntyre and O’Neill should he get the nod.
