Government give green light for grassroots sports to return from this weekend

The government has given the green light for grassroots sport to return - starting with cricket from July 11.

The ECB submitted a framework for cricket's return - and now other sports - including football - plan to do the same.

It will allow members of different households to train and compete in matches together, while some spectators will also be allowed to attend community fixtures in small numbers - provided they are in groups of two households only, or no more than six people from different households, and observe social distancing.

Sports minister Nigel Huddleston said: "This is fantastic news for the millions of people who miss playing sport with their friends and teammates.

“This guidance sets out how community sport can be done safely, so many more sports can get going again.

“Sports Governing Bodies are now putting stringent measures in place so that the millions of people that play, officiate and volunteer can keep safe while enjoying all the benefits that grassroots sport brings.”

Organisers are being urged to collect information on participants at both training and matches in order to support the government's track and trace efforts.

Players, officials and volunteers must self-assess for Covid-19 symptoms and should not train, play or attend matches if they or anyone they live with are symptomatic.

Participants have been urged to minimise their use of public transport and all sports have been told they must adhere to social distancing during warm-ups and breaks in play.

Sports which use a single ball that is touched by multiple players, such as football and basketball, must include in their action plan how they plan to reduce the risk of transmission via the ball.

The government has also given the green light for swimming pools and gyms to reopen.

Outdoor pools can open again from July 11 while indoor gyms, pools and leisure centres can do so from July 25.
