Google Calendar down: Hundreds of users complain of error messages and outage

Google calendar was down as hundreds of users complained of error messages.

Users of Google Calendar and Gmail were saying the services wouldn't load, but the tech giant has since said the issue was limited to the calendar function only.

The first reports of the issues appeared about 9.30am local time.

It appeared the problem was with Google Calendar, with users reporting Gmail experiencing linked problems.

However, a spokesperson for Google told the Mirror that the firm did not know of any Gmail outage, and only had an issue with Calendar.

They confirmed this issue was now "fully mitigated."

Down Detector, an online outage tracker, was logging thousands of reports across the country.

The error message seen by users read: "500. That's an error.

"There was an error. Please try again later. That's all we know

"If the problem persists, see the Google Workspace Status Dashboard or visit the Help Centre."

The 500 error code means something from the server has gone wrong.

It could come from anything from the server requested resources to an issue with outdated or corrupted cache and cookies.

The problems appeared to have only affected the UK.

In under an hour, the problem appeared to have been resolved.

At its height, 2,981 reports were made on Down Detector.

Many had taken to social media to air their frustrations.

One wrote: "@googlecalendar Hi, it appears your service is having issues today.

"The Workspace shows it as up but I'm getting 500 error when trying to view my calendar."

Another added: "Is there any issue with Google Calendar trying to log in but showing error 500."

Last month, thousands of users reported issues with the major websites Google and YouTube.

The issues appeared to only affect those in the UK (PA)

The search engine's email service Gmail also went down, according to reports on social media.

One person said: "Gmail is down just when I need to send an important email!"

DownDetectorUK, an analytics account, said problems had started at just before 8:45am.

"User reports indicate Gmail is having problems since 8:44 AM GMT," it said on Twitter.

"RT if you're also having problems #Gmaildown."

According to DownDetectorUK, more than 1,000 reported problems with Google over several hours.

At least 400 people outlined similar issues with YouTube - which is owned by Google.

The outages appear to have impacted the UK most heavily.
