George Segal dead: Hollywood acting legend and Goldbergs star passes away aged 87

Hollywood actor George Segal has died at the age of 87, his wife Sonia announced tonight.

The actor died in Santa Rosa, California, following complications from bypass surgery.

In a statement, Sonia said: "The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery."

The actor rose to fame in the 1960s and starred in films such as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Fun with Dick and Jane, and Time of Darkness.

On television he was best known for his six-year stint as Jack Gallo on Just Shoot Me! at the turn of the millennium.

He has also played Albert "Pops" Solomon on The Goldbergs since 2013 and had just finished his eighth season on the show.

It's expected that the last episode he filmed, episode 16 of the show’s current season, will pay tribute to George.

The show's creator Adam Goldberg was among many who took to Twitter to share their condolences. He wrote: "Today we lost a legend. It was a true honor being a small part of George Segal’s amazing legacy.

"By pure fate, I ended up casting the perfect person to play Pops. Just like my grandfather, George was a kid at heart with a magical spark."

Co-star on the show, Wendi McLendon-Covey posted a picture of her and the late actor on her social media and simply captioned it: "Grateful."

The 87-year-old also received five Golden Globe Awards nominations for his on-screen performances, winning two.

This included the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy in 1974 for his performance in A Touch of Class.

His performances have also been recognised with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

George was born on February 13, 1934, in Great Neck, New York.

He was married three times: to film editor Marion Sobel from 1956 until they divorced in 1983, to music manager Linda Rogoff from 1983 until her death in 1996, and to Sonia Schultz Greenbaum since 1996.

He leaves behind his two daughters, Polly and Elizabeth.
