Gardai rush to scene after taxi driver shot in Drogheda, Co Louth

A taxi driver was shot in Drogheda, Co Louth tonight.

Gardai are at the scene of a shooting on George's Street, on the Bridge of Peace in the town.

The victim of the shooting was a taxi driver, who was hit after a number of shots were fired at his car at around 6.20pm.

The man, in his late 30s, was injured and rushed to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The bridge has been closed off while gardai examine the scene.

Gardai said in a statement: "Gardai are currently at the scene of a shooting incident in Drogheda.

"The incident occurred shortly after 6.20pm on the Bridge of Peace in the centre of the town were a number of shots were fired at a taxi.

"The driver of (the) taxi, a man understood to be in his late 30s injured in the shooting, has been removed by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

"The bridge is currently closed to traffic in both directions and local diversions are in place.

"Investigations are ongoing.

"Further updates will follow."

AA Roadwatch said earlier: "George's St is closed at the Bridge of Peace in Drogheda due to an incident.

"Gardai are at the scene and diversions are in place."
