Fukushima earthquake: Japan hit by 6.5 tremor off coast that's felt in Tokyo

Japan has been hit by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake just off the coast of Fukushima which could be felt in Tokyo.

The strong quake struck at around 11.30am British time roughly 40km (25 miles) off the east coast of the country and at a depth of approximately 50km.

No tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. 

There were no were immediate reports of damage.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas.

The country accounts for about 20% of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.  

Fukushima is a prefecture, or region, that has a capital city of the same name.

The city of Fukushima was abandoned in 2011 after an earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear meltdown in a local power plant.

  The earthquake and subsequent tsunami left 19,000 people dead or missing and triggered the world's largest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

In total 200,000 people were evacuated from the surrounding area with large swathes still classed as uninhabitable due to radiation.
