Bob Hawke dead: Ex-PM hailed 'greatest Australian of generation' dies, aged 89

Bob Hawke, the former Prime Minister of Australia, has died.

Hawke, who was Australia's 23rd Prime Minister from March 1983 to December 1991, is considered one of the most popular Prime Ministers in Australian history.

He have died peacefully at home at the age of 89, according to his widow, Blanche d’Alpuget.

He is survived by Ms d’Alpuget, three children, a stepson and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Sydney in the coming weeks.

Ms d’Alpuget said: “Today we lost Bob Hawke, a great Australian - many would say the greatest Australian of the post-war era.”

She added: “Bob Hawke and Paul Keating and their governments modernised the Australian economy, paving the way for an unprecedented period of recession-free economic growth and job creation.”
