Flight lands at Edinburgh Airport due to emergency carrying German football team

A flight carrying the German national football team has landed amid a mid-air emergency at Edinburgh Airport this morning.

The alert was sounded at approximately 5:14am this morning, and was tweeted by @Somchai_99, who stated: "Klasjet KLJ2703 LY-FLT (B735) with German Football National Team on board has been diverted to EDI. #DFBTeam."

On flight tracking website Flightradar24, it can be seen that the flight, which was headed for Frankfurt, has stopped off in Edinburgh with the squawk code 7700, which is used for general emergencies on board an aeroplane.

The official German national football team Twitter account has released a tweet updating on the situation, which is translated into: "#infotweet Safety first. Safe stopover as a precaution in Edinburgh. From there, individual onward and return journeys are planned."

The national team Twitter account has now tweeted at 5:44am with an update: "We are fine. Safety check on the machine is running..."

This confirms that nobody on board has fallen unwell, which is a common case for the alert code 7700 to be used.

Edinburgh Airport has confirmed that the flight KLJ2703 landed at the airport at approximately 5:04am this morning.

The official Twitter account for the German national team updated users by stating: "Time for another coffee.

"Everything here is very calm, calm and professional. We are still on the plane and will be patient for a while."

The national team Twitter account tweeted this update: "Update: The replacement pilot is now on the way to Edinburgh to bring the delegation, team, trainer and supervisor to Frankfurt and Munich."

Another update from the German national team page, stating: "We are now on the replacement plane. Going straight to Frankfurt and Munich.

"Also in my luggage: 9 points from 3 games."

In football news, Germany are heading back home with three wins from three, following a four nil thrashing against Iceland in Reykjavik yesterday.

Scorers include Chelsea players Timo Werner and Antonio Rüdiger, former Manchester City winger Leroy Sané, and Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry.

In their other matches, Germany beat Armenia in a six goal thriller without reply, and in their first matchday, beat Liechtenstein two nil thanks to goals from Werner and Sané in each half.

This is a breaking news story, and will be updated should more information become available.
