Rocket engine explodes at Russian missile base killing two and injuring six

An explosion at a Russian missile test base has killed two people and injured six.

The military unit in which the fire occurred is located near the village of Nenoksa, where ballistic missiles are tested for the Russian Navy.

The blast was caused by the explosion of a liquid-propellant rocket engine, according to the Russian defence ministry.

The department said in a statement issued to Russian news agency TASS: "As a result of the accident, six representatives of the Ministry of Defense and a developer enterprise were injured of varying severity.

"Two specialists died from the wounds received.

"All the victims were promptly taken to a medical facility, where they received the necessary medical care."

The Russian defence ministry has said that radiation levels are 'within norm' and that no harmful substances were released into the atmosphere.

Since 1965 numerous rockets have been launched from the area which went on to be used in submarines.

A source told RIA News in Russia: "Hospitals in the Arkhangelsk region are ready for the possible reception of the victims of the incident near Nenoksa."

In December 2015 a block of flats in the area was hit by a rocket due to an accident during a missile launch test.

No one was killed.

Earlier this week a series of blasts rocked an arms depot at a military base in Siberia.

Eight people were injured.

Eleven thousand Russians were being evacuated from neighbourhoods in Krasnoyarsk region’s city of Achinsk following blasts and a fire at a military storage facility, TASS news agency cited local authorities as saying.

Seventy bomb disposal experts were sent to secure the site while some residents stayed to try to put out the fires and save their homes.
