European elections: UKIP leader Gerard Batten LOSES MEP seat as fortunes plummet

UKIP leader Gerard Batten has lost his race to be re-elected to the European Parliament.

He was knocked from the position he has held for more than a decade as the Lib Dem vote surged in London, where he stood.

The Lib Dems came FIRST in the capital with three MEPs, followed by Labour with two, the Brexit Party with two and Green Party with one.

With two regions declared UKIP had 4.2% of the vote so far, down 29 points since its result in 2014 as votes bled away to the Brexit Party.

Mr Batten, who was top of the party's list in London, is braced for UKIP to lose dozens of seats as tonight's results are declared.

It comes as UKIP's deputy leader Mike Hookem quit to challenge his boss.

Mike Hookem has said he will challenge Mr Batten as the party descends into another civil war (PA)

Mr Batten has a difficult campaign after he committed to defending UKIP candidate Carl Benjamin after he made a series of rape jokes about Labour MP Jess Philips.

Citing chaos under Mr Batten's leadership, Mr Hookem said he wanted to offer "a real alternative" as the party plunged in the polls.

Mr Batten was elected to the top job unopposed in April 2018, and promised to resign after 12 months to allow a full raft of candidates to run.

In a letter to party officials, Mr Hookem said the leader had "squandered our natural advantage".

UKIP are set to lose almost all of their seats in these elections.

They topped the polls in 2014, but have since seen their support collapse - as supporters have fled to Nigel Farage's newly formed Brexit Party.
