England boss Gareth Southgate agrees to take 30 per cent pay cut

England manager Gareth Southgate will take a 30 per cent pay cut to his salary amid the coronavirus crisis.

The Football Association (FA) are expected to confirm the move next week, but it is believed that Southgate himself has already accepted the terms.

Speaking to Sky Sports News an FA spokesman said: "The financial implications of the coronavirus are not yet known however, as a not-for-profit organisation, we want to ensure that we take the appropriate course of action to support the wider organisation and our employees.

"We will make a further announcement on our next steps in due course."

Southgate has been in charge of England since 2016, and became something of a national hero when he lead the side to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018.

The move from Southgate comes as elite Premier League players come under increasing pressure to themselves offer up 30 per cent of their salaries.

A number of high-profile clubs, such as Liverpool and Tottenham, have recently been criticised for furloughing non-playing staff while not cutting players' wages.

A meeting was held on Friday with players and the PFA to try to resolve the issue, and the PFA released a statement on Saturday which read: "All Premier League players want to, and will, play their part in making significant financial contributions in these unprecedented times.

"Discussions about how players can best financially contribute have been ongoing during the current crisis, and prior to yesterday’s announcement by the Premier League."

The full bleak picture of the financial crisis facing clubs was spelled out during the call after Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to consult their players regarding a combination of conditional reductions and deferrals

The likes of Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Tottenham's Harry Kane reported back to their dressing rooms.
