EFL release statement on positive COVID-19 tests in the Championship

The EFL have confirmed that a number of people have tested positive for coronavirus ahead of the planned Championship restart.

A total of 2,213 players and club staff from across the Championship were tested for COVID-19 in the past week, with eight individuals testing positive from six clubs.

The division recommences from June 20 with 108 matches of the regular season still to be played and matters at both the top and bottom of the Championship still to be settled on the pitch.

The clubs and individuals affected have not been revealed by the EFL and those who have tested positive will now self-isolate in line with the guidelines provided by the EFL.

Championship season so far

Only those who have returned negative coronavirus tests will be allowed to enter their training grounds.

Testing has also been taking place in Leagues One and Two, where only the play-offs are due to be played after both regular campaigns were curtailed.

In League One over the past week, 254 players and club staff were tested from four teams.

Of these, four individuals have tested positive from two clubs.

In League Two, 174 players and club staff were tested over the course of the past week with zero individuals testing positive.

With the action due to resume shortly in the Championship and the play-offs taking place in Leagues One and Two, the EFL will make central announcements of coronavirus tests results every Wednesday at midday to ‘continue to support competition integrity and transparency’, a statement said.
