Notorious Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo has been locked up for life.
El Chapo, whose real name is Joaquín Guzmán, was convicted in February on murder conspiracy and drug charges.
Today he was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years by U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan.
He was also ordered to pay $12.6 billion (£10.1bn).
The 62-year-old, whose nickname means 'Shorty', trafficked tons of cocaine, heroin and marijuana while engaging in multiple murder conspiracies will head of the Sinaloa Cartel.
He is being held in solitary confinement in the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a fortress-like jail in lower Manhattan.
The judge said that even if the law had allowed him any leeway, he would have imposed the harshest sentence available, adding that any redeeming qualities El Chapo might have were erased by his "overwhelming evil" actions.
"Since the government will send me to a jail where my name will not ever be heard again, I take this opportunity to say: There was no justice here,” El Chapo said, according to the New York Daily News.
“I drink unsanitary water, no air or sunlight, and the air pumped in makes my ears and throat hurt. In order to sleep, I put toilet paper in my ears.
"My wife had not been allowed to visit, and I cant hug my daughters,” he said. “This has been psychological, emotional and mental torture 24 hours a day.”
El Chapo was convicted earlier this year following almost three months of testimony and almost a week of deliebration.
He was charged and found guilty on 10 criminal counts, including drug trafficking and engaging in a criminal enterprise as leader of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel.
The 61-year-old rose from poverty in rural Mexico to run a global drug empire and amass billions of dollars operating a criminal enterprise.
He made his name during the 1980s digging tunnels under the Mexico/US border that allowed him to smuggle drugs more quickly than his rivals.
He amassed power during the 1990s and 2000s through often bloody wars with rivals, eventually becoming the best-known leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
His 11-week trial, which featured testimony from more than a dozen former associates of El Chapo who had made deals to cooperate with prosecutors, offered the public an unprecedented look at the cartel's inner workings.
The witnesses, who included some of El Chapo's top lieutenants, a communications engineer and a onetime mistress, described how he built a sophisticated organization reminiscent of a multinational corporation.
He sent drugs northward with fleets of planes and boats, and had detailed accounting ledgers and an encrypted electronic communication system run through secret computer servers in Canada, witnesses said.
U.S. prosecutors have claimed that he sold more than $12 billion worth of drugs, and Forbes magazine once listed him as among the world's richest men.
Before he was finally captured in 2016, El Chapo twice escaped maximum-security prisons in Mexico.
He often lived on the run.
After being imprisoned in Mexico in 1993, El Chapo escaped in 2001 hidden in a laundry cart and spent thefollowing years moving from one hideout to another in the mountains of Sinaloa, guarded by a private army.
He was extradited to the United States to face trial in January 2017.
