Driver dies after car smashes into tree then parked van in Bolton

A man has died after a car smashed into a tree before colliding with a parked van in Bolton.

Police were called to Smithills Dean Road at around 6pm this evening (Tuesday).

The driver of the black car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coun Roger Hayes, who represents the Smithills ward, was on the phone in his home when he heard a 'loud noise' as the vehicle crashed.

He went outside a saw a car had overturned, he said.

He said: "I live right next to it. It looked very bad. The car was upside down. I found bits of the car in my driveway.

"The road was then taped off.
