Breaking down the Steelers’ picks in the latest Draft Wire mock draft

The NFL scouting combine is in full swing and the Pittsburgh Steelers have sent a full crew to Indianapolis to scout talent for the 2019 NFL draft. With the draft on everyone’s mind, the folks over at Draft Wire have updated their four-round mock draft and we are taking a look at the picks for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

First round-Montez Sweat | Edge | Mississippi State

Second round-Julian Love | Cornerback | Notre Dame

Third round-Tre Lamar | Linebacker | Clemson

Fourth round-Rodney Anderson | Running back | Oklahoma

This is a pretty typical mock draft scenario for the Steelers. Montez Sweat is a high upside type of edge guy and would give Pittsburgh a player who can take some of the pressure off of T.J. Watt.

In the second round we get Julian Love, who is a solid, physical cornerback. He might not be ready to start as a rookie but would be a contributor right away. The rest of the draft is largely filler as inside linebacker and running back aren’t really top needs.

Where could this draft have been better? Addressing the lack of depth at safety would help. If Morgan Burnett is released, safety becomes a much higher priority with all the sub-package defense the Steelers run. Also, assuming the Steelers eventually trade Antonio Brown, there should be another top pick in the mix to get his replacement.
