Breaking down the Oakland Raiders’ puzzling offseason moves

The Oakland Raiders have charted an irregular course during the 2019 offseason.

Yes, they acquired receivers Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams in an effort to revamp their offense. That was important as Oakland stood by quarterback Derek Carr.

But the Raiders also made tackle Trent Brown one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in the NFL, only to move him to the right side. They signed troubled guard Richie Incognito, which was an incongruous decision when considering general manager Mike Mayock’s recent comments on signing players with “character.” The Raiders’ 2019 draft class had some oddities, too, with defensive end Clellin Ferrell at No. 4 overall, running back Josh Jacobs at No. 24 and safety Jonathan Abrams at 27. Ferrell seemed like a reach. It’s hard to justify taking a running back, like Jacobs, in the first round. Abrams is an old-school, hard-hitting safety in a new-school pass-heavy NFL.

What are the Raiders doing? How will this come together?
