The Miami Dolphins, with questions at offensive tackle this offseason, have brought in both rookies and veterans to challenge Austin Jackson for the starting job as well as potentially provide depth if Jackson is the starter.
Seven-year veteran Cedric Ogbuehi was one of the more experienced tackles that Miami gave a deal to this offseason. According to Over the Cap, the Dolphins and Ogbuehi agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.35 million.
The 31-year-old is set to earn roughly $1.17 million in a base salary. The deal also includes a $50,000 signing bonus and $135,000 in a roster bonus. The only guaranteed money on the salary cap is the signing bonus, so if Ogbuehi were beaten out for a roster spot, Miami could cut him, save $1.3 million and be stuck with just $50,000 in dead cap.
With this information, it’s hard to say that his spot is a guarantee when the regular season rolls around. Isaiah Wynn, another veteran tackle who the Dolphins brought in along with Ogbuehi, was given a larger guarantee and has more recent consistent starting experience.
They also have players with some positional versatility like Robert Jones and Ryan Hayes who could potentially be depth at both guard and tackle, making it even harder for Ogbuehi to make the roster as someone who has never played a snap on the interior.
