Donald Trump aide Hope Hicks who travelled with him on Air Force One tests positive for Covid-19

One of Donald Trump's closest aides has tested positive for Covid-19, the US president has confirmed.

Hope Hicks, who travelled with him on Air Force One to a rally in Minnesota on Wednesday, has tested positive for the virus.

Hicks has been a central figure in Trump's inner circle - previously serving as White House Communications Director.

She left the administration in 2018, before returning earlier this year as a 'counselor to the President', answering to his son in law, Jared Kushner.

The White House says there is no indication President Trump has contracted the virus.

A spokesman said: "The President takes the health and safety of himself and anyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously.

"White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting Covid-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the president is travelling."

According to Bloomberg reporter Jennifer Jacobs, Ms Hicks is experiencing symptoms - and has been in close proximity to the President without wearing a mask in recent days.

She was reportedly quarantined on Air Force One on the way back from the Minnesota rally last night.

Challenged on his decision to hold large, outdoor rallies with very few people wearing masks during the chaotic TV debate on Tuesday night, the President said: "Well so far we have had no problem whatsoever.

"It’s outside, that makes a big difference according to the experts.

"And we do them outside and we have tremendous crowds as you see.”
