Donald Cerrone taken to hospital following loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 246

Donald Cerrone was taken to hospital following his loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 246 in Las Vegas.

Cerrone was due at the post-fight press conference but it was announced he would not be attending because of his injuries, and would need to get checked out at hospital.

He suffered a big left to open things up, which caused his nose to start bleeding, and was then the subject of a head-kick to end the fight.

He has since been released from hospital, however, and does not appear to have suffered any lasting damage from the bout.

The fight marked a stunning return to the octagon for McGregor, who was fighting for the first time since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the same T-Mobile Arena 15 months ago.

The Irishman was the favourite for the fight, but it was perhaps not expected that he would make such light work of the veteran Cerrone, who had no answer to McGregor.

Speaking after the fight McGregor said:  “I’m the first fighter in UFC history to secure a knockout victory at featherweight, lightweight and welterweight.

“I’m so happy. UFC can strip fighters and give fighters make believe belts but they can’t take away knockout finishes.”

Attention will now turn towards McGregor's next opponent, with the likes of Jorge Masvidal and a rematch with Khabib touted as potential options.

In the co-main event, Holly Holm beat Raquel Pennington, although the fight failed to ignite and there were audible boos from the crowd throughout the three rounds.

Speaking afterwards Holm said:  "It feels really good to have a win. I always want more, I always want perfection, I know that I have more that I could show. I’m very happy to have the win and start the year off right."

Elsewhere there were victories for Diego Ferreira over Anthony Pettis, Brian Kelleher over Ode Osbourne and Aleksei Oleinik over Maurice Green,
