Dennis Hogan gave his all against Jaime Munguia, but controversially lost on the judges' scorecards.
The Kildare native, who was a huge underdog for the WBO Super Welterweight title fight, went all 12 rounds with the undefeated Mexican.
Afterwards, Munguia admitted he thought it was a draw going into the final round but was awarded the fight by majority decision.
The judges scored it: 115-113, 116-112 and 114-114.
Hogan, who is based in Brisbane, said the result was "bad for boxing."
A number of fans also blasted the result, labelling it a "hometown decision".
Speaking after the fight, Hogan said: "I knew I won the fight. I knew in my heart and soul. So disappointed to train as hard as I did and for this to happen.
"We came here in good faith and it's no disrespect to anybody here, but apart from the people who scored it and allowed this decision to go through, everybody knows.
"This is bad for boxing, bad for me."
