Danny Ayres dead: Tributes paid as beloved British speedway star dies aged 33

Beloved British speedway star Danny Ayres has died at the age of 33.

Ayres, one of the sport's great entertainers, was set to ride for the Scunthorpe Scorpions in the upcoming season.

Having started his career with National League side Kent in 2014 at the age of 27, Ayres broke into the Championship with Glasgow in 2016.

He also rode for Leicester, Redcar, Cradley and Ipswich during his career.

His official Facebook page wrote on Saturday evening: "We have some awful news to bring you. There’s is no easy way to report this. Danny has passed away.

"His passing is tragic, extremely sad and very untimely. To say we are shocked and devastated is an understatement. Our thoughts and condolences are with Danny’s family."

A statement from Speedway GB read: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of British rider Danny Ayres.

"Danny has always been an entertainer and his loss will be felt throughout the sport in Great Britain.

"Our thoughts are with Danny’s family at this awfully difficult and tragic time."

Seven time British champion Scott Nicholls voiced his sadness on social media: "I really do not know what to say. Danny was such a character and will be deeply missed. Such sad news.

"Thoughts are with his loved ones. R.I.P Danny".

Scunthorpe Scorpions added in their own statement: "RIP Danny Ayres. We're lost for words right now - suffice to say, we are devastated and our thoughts are with his family."

Another of his former clubs, Cradley Heathens also wrote: "We are truly shocked and devastated by the news of this man passing away.

"Danny Ayres was a delight to have in our team and he loved his time with us. Our heart goes out to his family at this tragic time."

Peterborough Panthers added: "Peterborough Speedway join the the rest of the speedway community in expressing our sadness at the passing of Danny Ayres.

"We offer our sincere condolences to Danny’s family at this most difficult time."
