Cricket legend Brian Lara rushed to hospital with chest pains

Cricket legend Brian Lara has been rushed to hospital in India with chest pains.

The former West Indies great, 50, complained of discomfort and was taken to Global Hospital in Mumbai.

Lara is covering the Cricket World Cup as part of the Star Sports broadcast team in India.

He was taken to hospital in the Parel area of the city at 8am (BST) on Tuesday.

No further details have been released on his condition, but a statement is expected in due course.

Lara holds the record for the highest individual Test score after he scored 400* against England in Antigua in 2004.

He also holds the record for the highest individual score in first-class cricket after scoring 501* for Warwickshire against Durham back in 1994.

Lara, born in Trinidad, racked up over 11,000 Test runs before retiring from international cricket in 2007.

He made a brief return in T20 cricket in 2010 and has continued to play exhibition matches in recent years.

Lara tragically lost his father, Bunty, to a heart attack in 1989, before he had made his international debut.

He paid tribute to his father when he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2012, saying: "This person you see today before you accepting this Hall of Fame honour is someone [my father] moulded.

"He ensured that I had everything I needed to succeed as a cricketer and in life, even in trying times.

"He made a special effort to make sure everything was there. I had to work hard... but I knew I had strong support.

"My biggest pain was that he did not see me play a Test match, but having the West Indies team in Trinidad at his funeral was a special tribute to the man who made sure I was given the tools to play this glorious game and make such a lasting contribution."

Lara was in England just last week as he appeared on Good Morning Britain alongside Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.
