Coronation Street's Tristan Gemmill QUITS after four years as Robert Preston

Coronation Street star Tristan Gemmill has quit the show after spending four years playing Robert Preston.

The Australian actor, who's character was married to both Tracy Barlow and Carla Connor, has been in the ITV soap since 2015.

He broke the shock news on Twitter today, writing: Folks, I just wanted to let you know that the time has come for me to hang up the chef’s gear and head for pastures new.

"There is still a lot of drama & shenanigans to come for Robert but I will be leaving Corrie later in the year."

Tristan, 51, took over the role of Robert in 2015 from original actor Julian Kay.

The character had been away from the show for 12 years when he made his return with Tristan playing him.

After two years on the Cobbles, he moved on to a new love interest as he fell for Kym Marsh's character Michelle Connor.

Tristan's departure from Weatherfield comes after Kym also announced she's leaving Corrie after 13 years.

Soap fans have been left devastated by his exit, and they've flooded Twitter with comments wishing him luck.

One wrote: "That's very sad news you've been a great addition to Corrie over the years a very talented actor you will be sorely missed. Good Luck for your new venture."

Coronation Street fans convinced bosses are hinting at Celebrity X Factor stint for actor

Another added: "You have been amazing and a pleasure to watch. Gutted you’ll be leaving but wishing you all the best in your next adventure."

No details about his exit are known yet, but it's been revealed that Robert is set for a new romance after his doomed relationship with Carla.

He's set to move on with Vicky Jefferies , played by Kerri Quinn.

Pictures of the pair filming kissing scenes emerged this week.

It looks like there's still plenty of drama in store before his big exit.
