Cookham incident: Second man has died after two people got into difficulty swimming

A second man has died after getting into difficulty in the water in a village on the River Thames.

Police responded to reports on Tuesday that two men had got into difficulty swimming in a stretch of water called Lulle Brook, between Odney Lane and Mill Lane, Cookham, Berkshire.

A member of the public pulled a man from the water and he was taken to hospital.

The man, aged 37, from Hounslow, has since died.

A police spokesman said: "His next of kin have been informed and are being supported.

"His death is being treated as unexplained and not suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Investigating officer, Detective Inspector Ash Mohmood, based at Maidenhead police station said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this very difficult time.

“The men were of a Syrian background and I know this will affect the Syrian community greatly, our thoughts are with you also.

“I would again like to reiterate our thanks to the members of the public alongside Berkshire and Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services, South Central Ambulance Service, and Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue who assisted our officers.”

On Wednesday, a local hero described his desperate CPR efforts on one of the victims of the tragic river incident.

Chef Connor Godfrey was fishing on the weir in Cookham and described how playful shouts turned to panicked screaming as two men got into difficulty.

Connor said kids had been jumping from the weir into the gushing water below all afternoon, as well as a group of men later in the day.

He said the men had been laughing and joking before "playful shouts turned to more serious shouting" - with a large group gathering to the right of the weir.

Search and rescue teams searched the water (PA)

Connor said a man, believed to be in his 30s, "floated to the surface face down" - before being dragged to the shore.

He said: "As they pulled him out of the water they turned him on his side and patted him.

"People were obviously trying to help but I could see thy weren't doing it right.

"I ran over and moved everyone out of the way and started chest compressions."

It's ended in tragedy (PA)

Connor, who only completed the life-saving first aid in February through his job as a chef in Mayfair, performed chest compressions and pulse checks on the man for 15 minutes until paramedics arrived and took over.

He added: "I was continuing CPR and the paramedic was opening the defibrillator and he told me to carry on.

"They put the patches on his chest and they said when I reached the next 30 compressions, they would take over."

As Connor stepped away, he said a police officer later informed him a pulse had been found and he was being transferred to hospital.

Helicopters were also sent to the incident (UKNIP)

Connor added: "It all happened so fast. First there was a scream and then all of a sudden it just escalated from half six to about quarter past 7.

"It was a whirlwind."

A third man also entered the water to help, but officers said he left the water unharmed.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said their crew were at the scene for three and a half hours

In a statement they said: "Upon arrival, crews found that one man had been rescued by the public and placed in the care of South Central Ambulance Service.

"Crews continued to support partners at the scene in searching for a second man. At 9.30pm the scene was handed over to the Thames Valley Police.

"We are urging residents across Berkshire to take car near water. As the warm weather continues, it may be tempting to swim in open water, but there are many dangers involved.

"One of the main risks when entering the water is cold water shock, even if the weather is warm. You also do not know what's beneath the surface - there could be unseen currents and reeds which can pull you under."
