Child left with facial injuries after glass from window fell from fourth floor of city centre building

A child has been left with injuries to their face after glass fell from a fourth floor window in Manchester city centre.

It happened just a short distance away from Piccadilly Gardens at around 1:15pm this afternoon.

Police and fire crews said they were called to Piccadilly Plaza on New York Street after reports debris from a "failed" window pane had fallen onto a child below.

It is understood glass fell from a building above the University of Law and below the City Tower.

Only the frosted, outer part of the glass pane is said to have smashed with most of it said to have fell onto a balcony below.

However shards of glass can be seen strewn on the pavement,

Police said the child suffered facial injuries but that they are not believed to be serious.

A paramedic attended but the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said they didn't need to take anyone to hospital.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: "Officers were called to Piccadilly Plaza, Manchester city centre, today (10 June) at about 1.30pm after reports a window had fallen onto a child.

"NWAS and GMFRS also attended and the child sustained facial injuries that aren't believed to be serious.

"There are several road closures in place in the area and people are advised to avoid New York Street and Mosley Street."

Around 10 firefighters are at the scene (ASP)

An NWAS spokesman said: "We received a call from the fire service at 13.31, and one of our cyclist paramedics went to the scene. We weren’t required to take anyone to hospital."

A cordon remains in place with people being urged to avoid New York Street and Mosley Street.

The fire service are using an aerial platform to access the building with around 10 firefighters currently at the scene.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Just before 1.15pm this afternoon (Thursday 10 June), one fire engine and an aerial platform from Manchester Central fire station were called to New York Street, Manchester, following reports of falling debris from a failed fourth-floor window pane.

"Firefighters arrived quickly and used the aerial platform to make the outer window pane safe.

"Our crews remain in attendance at this time, alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police."
