Child killed after lorry smashes into grandmother pushing pram in 'awful' incident

A child has been killed after lorry a smashed into a grandmother pushing pram earlier today.

The tragedy took place on Main Street in the Co Down village of Moira in Northern Ireland and is understood to have involved a lorry and a grandmother pushing a pram.

One person has been taken to hospital following the collision and remains in a critical condition.

Lagan Valley Alliance MLA Sorcha Eastwood expressed her condolences to child's family following the incident saying: "I am absolutely devastated for the family that have lost a special little child in an absolutely awful incident in Moira this afternoon.

"My heart is just broken for them and I know we will all hold the family in prayer over the next while, God bless them all. Just devastating."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Motorists are advised that Main Street in Moira is closed due to a serious road traffic collision.

"The off-slip to Moira from the M1 is also closed. The advice would be to seek an alternative route for your journey. An update will follow in due course."

DUP councillor Caleb McCready said the child was being pushed in a pram by his grandmother when they were both struck by a lorry.

He said: “Unfortunately a child has passed away" adding his “thoughts and prayers are with the families involved at this time”.

Witnesses reported seeing the grandmother trapped beneath the lorry, with UUP councillor Jim Dillon adding: "I want to express my deepest sympathies to the family concerned and to the lorry driver. It is an absolute tragedy that nobody could have envisaged.”

DUP councillor Allan Ewart said: “Police are continuing to carry out examinations at the scene and this is causing continuing disruption to traffic in the surrounding area, including the M1 off-slip.

"It has already impacted upon some school transport and will likely affect commuter traffic later also.“
