Chemical leak at major hospital as four fire engines and multiple ambulances swarm scene

A chemical leak at a major hospital has seen at least four fire engines and multiple ambulances swarm the scene.

Emergency services were called to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital just before 7pm this evening.

Witnesses said fire crews remained on site at the front and towards the middle of the hospital grounds.

In a statement a spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire service told ITV : "We were called at 17:42 this evening following a small chemical leak at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

"The area has been evacuated and two casualties have been assessed by an on-site team.

"Crews from Eastleigh, Redbridge and Romsey are currently on the scene working to contain the leak and clear the affected area."

The specific nature of the incident at the hospital is not yet known.

Julie Dawes, chief nurse at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, confirmed emergency services were on sight but the hospital was still accepting any patients needing urgent or emergency care.
