Chelsea progress to Champions League knockout stages after Juventus mauling

Chelsea have booked their place in the Champions League last-16 after securing a thumping 4-0 win against Juventus.

Heading into the clash with the Italian champions, the Blues needed just a solitary point in order to book their progression to the next round.

They got that and more with a stunning win against Max Allegri’s men at Stamford Bridge.

Trevoh Chalobah got Thomas Tuchel’s troops off to the best possible start with a first-half strike - although the Juve players were left furious after an apparent handball.

Chelsea then stepped up a gear in the second half as quickfire goals from fellow academy graduates Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi put the team into an extremely comfortable position before the hour-mark.

Juventus simply had no answer for the Blues’ stunning performance as Chelsea moved into top spot in Group H ahead of the final matchday, with Timo Werner rounding off the scoring in stoppage time.

The result now means that it is impossible for Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg to overtake the Blues and they go through to the last-16 and will be set to continue the defence of their European crown after the Christmas period.

Before that, however, the Blues will still be keen to round off the group stages by claiming top spot ahead of tonight’s opponent.

Should they beat Zenit in Russia, then they will go through as group winners. A draw however could well be enough for the Blues should Juventus fail to get the better of Malmo.

Despite what was an extremely promising night for the Blues against Juventus, there was however some worrying signs as both N’Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell were withdrawn due to injury.
