Chelsea charged by the FA following Reece James penalty incident vs Liverpool

Chelsea have been handed a charge by the FA following the incident that saw Reece James sent off at Anfield against Liverpool last weekend.

The Chelsea defender was given his marching orders following an alleged handball against the Reds, an action which resulted in a penalty awarded to the home side.

Initially, the decision was not given, with referee Anthony Taylor then being recommended by the VAR to go and review the incident at the pitchside monitor. He then immediately showed James a red card, whilst awarding the Reds a spot kick - which was dispatched by former Chelsea winger Mo Salah.

In the aftermath of the penalty, the two sets of players came together in a huge disagreement shortly before half-time. Meanwhile, following the whistle for the half-time break, Chelsea players once again approached the referee to debate the decision.

As a result, The FA have now confirmed that Thomas Tuchel's men have now been handed a charge for their part in the incident via a short statement.

It read: "Chelsea FC has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E20.1 following their Premier League fixture against Liverpool FC on Saturday [28/08/21].

"It is alleged that Chelsea FC failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the 48th minute of the first half and following the half-time whistle.

"Chelsea FC has until Friday [03/09/21] to provide a response to this charge."

The game at an Anfield eventually finished 1-1, with Kai Havertz having opened the scoring on Merseyside before Salah hit his controversial equaliser.
