Jubilant scenes at The Valley as Charlton Athletic set up Wembley date with Sunderland

Charlton Athletic will face Sunderland in the League One play-off final at Wembley after beating Doncaster Rovers on penalties this evening (Friday).

Lee Bowyer's side won 4-3 on penalties at The Valley, after a dramatic game in south east London.

The Addicks held a 2-1 advantage going into the second leg, and Krystian Bielik gave the hosts the lead in the second minute of the game, putting them 3-1 ahead on aggregate.

But Doncaster fought back, iwith Tommy Rowe scoring an equaliser on the night nine minutes later.

Everything Lee Bowyer said about Charlton's victory over Doncaster Rovers

Charlton looked to be heading through to the final with no further goals until the closing stages of the game, when Andy Butler netted for Doncaster two minutes from time to force extra time.

John Marquis then put Doncaster ahead ten minutes into extra time, but Darren Pratley netted for Charlton soon after to level the tie at 4-4 on aggregate.

As such, the game went to penalties, with each of the first seven being converted as the Addicks took a 4-3 lead.

Marquis' miss gave Naby Sarr the opportunity to win the shootout for Charlton, but his effort was saved by Doncaster goalkeeper Marko Marosi.

However, Rowe sent his penalty wide, sparking jubilant scenes at The Valley as Charlton fans celebrated reaching Wembley for the first time in 21 years with a pitch invasion.

Charlton will now face Sunderland, who beat Portsmouth 1-0 on aggregate, in the League One play-off final in a repeat of the dramatic First Division play-off final in 1998, which the Addicks won on penalties after the game finished 3-3 after 90 minutes, and 4-4 after extra time.

The two sides will battle it out again at Wembley on Sunday, May 26.
