Change UK forced to change its name AGAIN after legal dispute with Change.org

Change UK has changed its name for a third time to The Independent Group for Change after the threat of legal action by Change.org.

It comes after the breakaway party split in two with six MPs returning to sit as independents and five staying as members of the new grouping.

The new party faced the threat of legal action from campaigning and petition website Change.org ahead of the European elections.

Since it was too late to amend their name in time for the poll the MPs say they agreed that they would not use Change UK permanently to avoid being sued.

They were told they had to change their name by 15th June, so have announced that they have applied to register as ‘The Independent Group for Change' and are awaiting the Electoral Commission's approval.

Change UK have split just four months after the 11 former Labour and Tory MPs formed a new party - and they've even elected another new leader.

It came on the back of dismal European election results for the party when it failed to pick up a single MEP and has since trailed as low as 1%.

The split sees six MPs sit as independents with just five staying as part of Change UK.

The rump of the party have elected ex-Tory Anna Soubry as their new leader.

But Chuka Umunna, Sarah Wollaston, Heidi Allen, Angela Smith and Luciana Berger have said they will return to "supporting each other as an independent grouping of MPs."

The party said in a statement: "Ahead of the European elections, lawyers for the organisation Change.org disputed our right to register as ‘Change UK’ with the Electoral Commission.

"Under threat of legal action by Change.org, which would have involved each MP being sued personally, and with no time left to register a new party name to contest the elections, our leadership at the time felt we had no option but to sign a legal agreement preventing the permanent use of the name Change UK once the campaign was over.

"We are now legally obliged to make a formal application to the Electoral Commission, to amend our name by 15th June, so today we are applying to register ourselves as ‘The Independent Group for Change' and will await the Electoral Commission's decision.

The statement added: "We remain determined as a party to tackle the big issues facing the country. Preventing a disastrous no deal Brexit and fixing Britain's broken politics remain our absolute focus as we begin to build our new policy platform."
