Bus driver 'ploughs into crowd in Istanbul before randomly stabbing pedestrians'

A bus driver armed with a knife rammed his vehicle into a crowd in Istanbul before stabbing people and jumping in the sea, according to reports.

The incident at a bus stop in the Turkish city has reportedly left one dead and at least a dozen other people injured, including two children.

An Istanbul city official confirmed one man had died in the aftermath of the attack.

The Independent reports that around five of those hurt were critically injured in the incident yesterday afternoon.

Authorities in the Turkish city alleged the bus driver jumped into the sea in an attempt to escape.

A 33-year-old man has reportedly been arrested.

Reports say the driver was seen fleeing from the scene, and slashed a man who tried to stop him, before attacking others who attempted to intervene. 

Footage of the scene shows people running away from the bus, which has a smashed windscreen.

A city official announced on Twitter that one man had died following yesterday's incident, in which several were injured.

Istanbul metropolitan municipality spokesman Murat Ongun wrote that one man had died, and twelve more victims continued to receive treatment.

Istanbul authorities are investigating the crash and closely monitoring the injured victims' wellbeing, he said.
