British tourist dies swimming off popular Spanish beach after waving arms for help

A British holidaymaker has died after getting into difficulties in the sea off a Costa del Sol resort.

The 51-year-old was helped out of the water on popular Carvajal beach in the Fuengirola resort at around 5pm on Thursday.

Onlookers had already dialled 999 after seeing what was happening and police and paramedics were soon on the scene.

But efforts to save him through CPR failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Spain’s National Police will now conduct a routine investigation and pass the details of their findings on to a local judge.

A source said there was nothing to indicate the death was suspicious and everything was pointing to the death being linked to a health problem.

A witness said: “He was chest-high in the water and appeared to lose consciousness after waving his arms and asking for help.”

A regional emergency response centre spokesman said: “We received several calls just after 5pm yesterday/on Thursday saying a foreign man had been brought out of the water and attempts were being made to revive him.

“Police and medical responders were mobilised and made efforts to save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Carvajal Beach is known for its coarse dark sand and pebbles and calm water.

It is a fairly busy beach, especially on the western side.

Although it is not regarded as one of the best on the Costa del Sol, it is a well-kept and clean beach which is popular with families.

The man has not been named.
