Boris Johnson will convene COBRA meeting in wake of London Bridge terror attack

Boris Johnson will convene a meeting of the government's emergency council COBRA in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack, No10 has confirmed.

The Prime Minister will chair the meeting of the intergovernmental group at 9.30pm.

It comes after Mr Johnson tonight urged Londoners to go about their business as usual as he vowed "never to be cowed or intimidated" after the London Bridge attack.

The Prime Minister spoke out after a knifeman wearing a fake suicide vest who injured several people - some seriously - was shot dead by police on London Bridge.

He praised the bravery of members of the public who tackled the knifeman despite fears he was wearing an explosive vest.

"This country will never be cowed or divided or intimidated by this kind of attack and our British values will prevail," added the PM, who received a personal briefing from the Met Police Commissioner.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "My heart goes out to the victims of this appalling atack.

"We owe a deep debt of gratitude to our police and emergency services, and the brave members of the public who put themselves in harm's way to protect others."

He confirmed election campaigning in London had been suspended as a mark of respect.

Boris Johnson returned to 10 Downing Street from his Uxbridge constituency and received a personal briefing from Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick as it was formally declared a terrorist incident.

Mr Johnson was expected to meet with senior security officials and police again on Friday night.

The Prime Minister and Jeremy Corbyn spoke by phone in the wake of the attack.

A White House spokesman said President Donald Trump , who will attend the NATO summit in London next week, was briefed on the incident.
