Bolton manager Ian Evatt and defender George Johnston had been due to speak to the media today at a pre-match press conference, but these were cancelled.

And the club has now confirmed the outbreak at the club, with this Saturday's game being postponed as a result.

A Wanderers statement read: "Bolton Wanderers informed the EFL that it would be unable to fulfil the fixture at the University of Bolton Stadium due to a number of positive COVID-19 cases in their squad.

"In light of the increased transmission rate of the Omicron variant, the EFL will now review the circumstances surrounding the postponement.

"In addition, it will assist affected Clubs throughout this challenging period to help them mitigate against the risk of infection amongst players and staff while ensuring their obligations to the EFL regulations are maintained.

"A rearranged date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course."

It was due to be the first game at the UniBol where supporters would have had to have shown evidence of their current Covid status.

That is now poised to be the Boxing Day clash against Morecambe.

Matches are being postponed up and down the English football pyramid as a result of Cvoid outbreaks as the highly transmissable Omicron variant of the virus takes hold.

Other games in League One this weekend have been called off due to Covid problems, including Accrington Stanley's trip to Sheffield Wednesday due to a Covid outbreak in the Owls squad.

Gillingham hosting Crewe Alexandra has also been postponed in light of positive cases in the Gills squad.

Doncaster Rovers' trip to take on Lincoln City has also been postponed due to postive cases in the Rovers squad.
