Bolton manager Phil Parkinson has resigned from the cash-strapped club.
The Trotters went into administration in May and are prevented from signing new players.
Bolton's youth players have had to feature in their opening matches of the season but the club postponed Tuesday's clash with Doncaster.
The EFL are set to hand Bolton another points deduction, having already docked the club 12 points for entering administration.
Bolton are hopeful a takeover by Football Ventures will be completed soon but Parkinson and assistant Steve Parkin have resigned.
"The club has received the notice of resignation from manager Phil Parkinson and assistant manager Steve Parkin and the matter is being considered," said a club statement.
Both Parkinson and Parkin are believed to have informed the club's administrators of their plans to depart before the crushing 5-0 defeat to Tranmere last weekend.
Speaking to The Bolton News, Parkinson said: "I felt it was the right time to go”.
The former Bradford boss, who joined Bolton in 2016, confirmed he had already spoken to the League Managers' Association.
Parkinson led Bolton to promotion from League One in his first season in charge and then kept the club in the second tier.
But financial struggles saw Bolton relegated last season before the club entered administration in May.
A delay in selling the club forced Parkinson to field the club's youngest ever line-up in the draw with Coventry.
