Body recovered from city centre canal after police respond to 'concern for welfare of man'

A body has been recovered from a city centre canal after police responded to reports of 'concern for the welfare of a man'.

A large cordon was in place this morning (Tuesday) in the area around St George's Island in Castlefield.

Greater Manchester Police said they were initially called to reports of 'concern for the welfare of a man' at around midnight.

An underwater search team arrived this morning and divers entered the water.

The search centred on the area of the Bridgewater Canal, nearest to the railway arches.

Sadly, the body of a man was pulled from the water earlier this afternoon.

A GMP spokesman said: "Police responding to reports of concern for the welfare of a man near Bridgewater Canal, Manchester, have sadly found a body.

"Formal identification is yet to take place but the man's next of kin has been informed."

"There are no suspicious circumstances and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
