Body of Robert F Kennedy’s granddaughter, 40, found after canoe tragedy

The body of former United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy's granddaughter has been found after a canoeing tragedy.

Maeve Kennedy McKean, 40, was found in Maryland, USA, on Monday, days after she and her son Gideon, 8, vanished.

The boy is now also feared to be dead.

The pair had been seen paddling a canoe into the waters off the Chesapeake Bay last Thursday to retrieve a ball.

Maryland Natural Resources Police said crews made the discovery at around 5.30pm local time on Monday, reports CBS Baltimore.

Officials said the body was found in about 25 feet of water some 2.5 miles away from Mrs McKean's mother’s home in Shady Side, Maryland, south of Annapolis.

The overturned canoe was quickly recovered having traveled miles downstream from where they entered the water.

The search for Gideon will continue on Tuesday.

Husband David McKean had confirmed his wife and son’s disappearance to the Washington Post at the weekend.

He told the newspaper his wife and son “popped into a canoe to chase [the ball] down.

"They just got farther out than they could handle and couldn’t get back in.”

Mrs McKean and Gideon are daughter and grandson of ex-Maryland Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who in turn was the daughter RFK.

Speaking on Friday, Mrs Townsend confirmed the search had "turned from rescue to recovery".

Following the discovery of Mrs McKean's body, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman said: “News of this tragedy hit me and my family hard this morning.

“We are holding Kathleen and her family in the light, and holding our own loved ones a little closer as we reflect on their pain and their loss."

Earlier on Monday, more than 100 family members held a prayer service via Zoom, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. posted on Instagram.

Mrs McKean was a public health and human rights lawyer and served as executive director of the Georgetown University Global Health Initiative.
