Body of newborn baby found in Morrisons car park as police try to trace mother

The body of a newborn baby has been discovered in a Morrisons car park.

West Midlands Police are urgently trying to trace the infant's mother following the grim discovery in Bilston, near Wolverhampton.

They said the baby was discovered by a member of the public on Sunday morning.

Officers say they do not know anything about the infant - including when the child was born or how they came to be in the car park.

However, they are "extremely concerned" for the welfare of the baby’s mother, and the force is urgently appealing for her or anyone who knows who she is to come forward, reports Birmingham Live.

Detective Inspector Jim Edmonds, from the West Midlands Police public protection unit, said: “This is a truly tragic discovery, and we’ve been treating the scene and the baby with the utmost care and dignity today.

"While we don’t yet know what has happened, what we do know is that there must be a mother out there who is in real need of help − and she is my absolute priority at the moment.

“We have been checking CCTV and speaking to hospitals, but it may be that the mother or someone who knows who she is sees this appeal.

“I really want to speak to her to make sure she’s OK, and to ensure that she can get the help that she urgently needs."

Officers and ambulances were pictured at the supermarket on the Black Country Route just after 9am on Sunday, with police confirming the tragic discovery later in the day.

Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch with West Midlands Police, quoting log 842 of 11 April.

Officers can be reached via live chat here or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
