Body found in search for missing Ausra Plungiene who vanished walking dog in Snowdonia

A body has been found in the search for a woman who went missing while walking her dog, police have said.

Ausra Plungiene, 56, from Prestatyn, North Wales, was last seen on Tuesday when she is believed to have left for a walk with her dog Eyora at about 10.30am but failed to return home.

A search across Eryri national park (Snowdonia) was co-ordinated after the alarm was raised shortly before 10pm on Tuesday and her car was found in a remote car park in the Rowen area in the early hours of Wednesday, North Wales Police said.

On Thursday, mountain rescue team members found a woman's body near Yr Aryg in the Carneddau mountain range, a force spokesman said.

A dog was found alive at the location and Ms Plungiene's family has been informed, although formal identification has yet to take place, police said.

Superintendent Owain Llewelyn said: "I would like to offer my thanks to all involved in the search for Ausra, in what have been extremely difficult weather conditions.

"Finally, I would appeal for Ausra's family to be afforded some privacy during the coming days."

Search teams worked through snow and gale force winds in the search for Ms Plungiene.

She is understood to have been heading for a walk in Snowdonia, but her family alerted police at around 10pm after she failed to return home. Her car was located by officers during the early hours of the following morning.

It is believed Ms Plungiene may have been wearing a dark pink or purple padded jacket, black leggings and blue shoes.

Her daughter yesterday begged for help in 'bringing her mummy home' as she appealed to the public.

Toma Plungauite Lamb said: "My mum is the most beautiful soul, who would do anything for anyone. So I’m asking for anyone with any information to come forward to bring our mummy home."

Dozens of rescue volunteers have been scouring the area where the 56-year-old mum was last seen in Snowdonia with her black Swedish lapphund called Eyora.

The pair had set off for the mountains above the Conwy Valley on Tuesday morning.

Her disappearance came as overnight temperatures plunged to almost zero degrees amid a yellow weather warning across parts of Wales for wind, rain and snow on higher ground.

Police had said she is an experienced mountain walker who was well equipped for the conditions.
