Ben Garner sacked by Bristol Rovers after Fleetwood Town defeat

Bristol Rovers have confirmed the departure of manager Ben Garner after Saturday's 4-1 defeat to Fleetwood Town.

Garner has been relieved of his duties with Rovers with the Gas 18th in League One, three points clear of the relegation zone.

Tommy Widdrington has been placed in caretaker charge.

Garner replaced Graham Coughlan in December, but only won five league games across his 11 months in charge.

He oversaw improvements off the pitch, with new training ground The Quarters opening in October. Garner also attempted to professionalise the club, bolstering his staff with analysis, nutrition and fitness experts.

But his efforts did not materialise in acceptable results, prompting the club to call time on his tenure 90 minutes after the final whistle on Saturday.

A statement from a club spokesman thanked Garner for his efforts.

"Bristol Rovers can this evening confirm that it has parted company with Manager Ben Garner," a statement said.

"Tommy Widdrington will be taking charge of first-team duties on a temporary basis, while the Club commences the process of appointing a new Manager.

"The club would like to thank Ben Garner for all his hard work and wish him the very best of luck for the future.

"The club will be making no further comment at this time."
