Barcelona complete £27million transfer of Spain Under-21 international

Barcelona have signed Real Betis full-back Junior Firpo in a deal that could cost the Spanish champions a potential £27million.

Dominican-born Firpo, 22, has agreed a five-year deal at Camp Nou, with Barca installing a £180million release clause in his contract.

The left-back will challenge Jordi Alba for a place in the Catalans' starting lineup in 2019-20, and is seen as the heir to the experienced Spain interantional - for both club and country.

Firpo, who made his Betis debut 18 months ago in February 2018, enjoyed a meteoric rise in Seville.

Last term he played 24 times in La Liga last season, scoring three goals and grabbing four assists as Betis finished 10th.

This summer he played a key role in Spain Under-21s European Championships' success.

Firpo has previously been linked with a switch to Liverpool, as a back up option to Andy Robertson following Alberto Moreno's exit.

However, interest from the Reds never went past the exploration stage, when it became apparent Betis' valuation of the player.

But Barcelona have negotiated a fee with Betis that sees them pay just £16million up front, with £11million in performance-related add-ons.

As such, he has now become Barcelona's fourth senior signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Frenkie de Jong, Antoine Griezmann and goalkeeper Neto.

Those deals have largely been funded by the departures of a number of fringe players, including Brazil winger Malcom, Andre Gomes, Denis Suarez and Jasper Cillessen.

More outgoings remain likely, with Los Cules continuing their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar.
