Albania earthquake: 3 dead and 140 injured after terrifying 6.4 magnitude tremor

Three people have died and more than 140 been injured after the biggest earthquake to strike Albania in decades.

The 6-4-magnitude tremor struck at 3.54am, sparking scenes of chaos as people ran for their lives while others were left trapped under collapsed buildings.

Footage posted on social media showed what appeared to be a levelled building in Durres, 40 km west of the capital Tirana, on the Adriatic coast.

Other videos showed buildings with large cracks and fallen masonry, including one apartment with most of a bedroom wall missing.

A witness described residents running out of properties in Tirana, some carrying babies while others reported power going down in several neighbourhoods.

A Defence Ministry spokesman said: "Firefighters and army staff are helping residents (caught) under the rubble" in Durres and the nearby village of Thumane."

One person died after jumping out of a window in the town of Kurbin during the tremor, the spokesman added.

They reportedly panicked and jumped out of the building.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 shook the country on September 21, damaging around 500 houses and destroying some.

The Defence Ministry had said it was the most powerful quake in Albania in the last 30 years.

The Balkan nation is the poorest country in Europe, with an average income of less than a third of the European Union average, according to Eurostat data.
