Arsenal confirm Zak Swanson loan to MVV Maastricht for 2020/21

Arsenal have confirmed that Zak Swanson will join MVV Maastricht on loan for the 2020/21 Eerste Divisie season.

The 19-year-old right-back has been at the club since the age of six and excelled last season as part of Steve Bould's Under-23s side, making 16 appearances in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy.

Swanson was also part of the title-winning Under-18s team in the 2018/19 season.

Although he is yet to make his first team debut for the club, the defender was one of the few Under-23s players training regularly with the first team after the restart.

Mikel Arteta loves Arsenal's team spirit

Over the past year, Swanson has done well to gain the trust of coaches at Arsenal, so much so that he captained the Under-23s on occasion during the 2019/20 campaign.

A consistent performer throughout the season, his biggest test came just before football was halted as Manchester City Under-23s travelled to Emirates Stadium with Leroy Sane in their ranks.

The German was making a return from injury so wasn't at his usual level, but Swanson approached the challenge extremely well, always ready to engage the former-City winger and close off the space in front of him while also attacking himself.

This performance in particular was highlighted by Bould post-match before he admitted he felt Swanson was one of his best players from the season.

"I thought Zak was our best player tonight," the Under-23s manager said to Arsenal.com.

"It was a great test for him, even though Sane isn’t going to be playing at his best as it was one of his first games back.

"Zak was very impressive and he has been all season in all fairness. I think he’s been one of our top two players for the whole of the season."
