Arsenal confirm Sam Greenwood transfer to Leeds United

Youngster Sam Greenwood is set to join Leeds United on a permanent transfer, Arsenal confirmed this morning [August 28].

The 18-year-old joined the Gunners in 2018 and after impressing for the Under-18s, was making steps towards becoming a Under-23s regular before the restart.

He scored 10 goals and made five assists in his first season at the club and netted six times in the 2019/20 campaign playing not just as a central striker but in wider areas also.

The initial fee that Arsenal will receive for Greenwood is understood to be around £1.5million, with future bonuses and clauses raising the potential price to £3million.

Greenwood is expected to join Leeds' Under-23s squad ahead of the first team's long-awaited return to the Premier League and spending just two seasons in north London, the 18-year-old made it known he was grateful for the opportunity.

"I want to say a big thank you to @arsenal and the supporters for the last 2 years of my career,” the player wrote on his Instagram page.

"Been an honour to play for the club while meeting some special people and making even better memories."

Focus on forwards in the Under-23s will now switch to Tyreece John-Jules and and Folarin Balogun, both of which expected to spend the 2020/21 season away from north London.

In John-Jules' case, his departure would be temporary. The 19-year-old impressed during the first half of last season for Steve Bould, was desperately close to making his first team debut under both Freddie Ljungberg and Mikel Arteta, but eventually joined Lincoln City on loan in January.

Following his time in League One, it is understood the striker as garnered interest for a loan from Championship ahead of the new season.

As for Balogun, his potential departure looks more likely to be on a permanent basis with Arsenal reportedly hoping to receive £8million for his services.
