Arsenal confirm Mikel Arteta's first exit of January transfer window as midfielder leaves

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has joined Roma on loan until the end of the season, Arsenal have confirmed.

Maitland-Niles was keen on making the move after being left frustrated with his lack of game time this season.

The 24-year-old was persuaded to stay by manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu last summer when Everton made a late attempt to sign the versatile midfielder.

Maitland-Niles posted on social media at the time, expressing his frustration at the fact a move fell through: "All I want to do is go where I'm wanted and where I'm going to play."

He's got his move this time around, however.

Arsenal initially demanded an obligation clause to be included in the deal with Roma which would be linked to the amount of appearances Maitland-Niles makes.

Roma's current financial situation means that they were only able to offer an initial loan fee, with talks expected to resume over a permanent move towards the end of Maitland-Niles' spell in Italy.

In the meantime, the Gunners have wished the Hale End graduate good luck.

A statement on Arsenal.com read: "Ainsley Maitland-Niles has joined Serie A side AS Roma on loan until the end of the season.

"The 24-year-old has been associated with us since he was six years old, developing through the Academy to first team, where he has made 132 appearances in all competitions."

Roma boss Jose Mourinho is an admirer of Maitland-Niles and football.london understands the Englishman has already spoken with Tammy Abraham, who joined the Italian giants from Chelsea last summer.

It is though that the I Giallorossi will attempt come back in to sign the 24-year-old in the summer on a permanent basis if the loan move goes well.
