Antwerp explosion: Three homes collapse with multiple people trapped under rubble

Three homes have collapsed following an explosion in Antwerp, Belgium.

Several people are believed to be still trapped under the rubble in the Wilrijk district.

Two people have been pulled alive from the debris although both have serious injuries.

The explosion happened at around 12.30pm local time (11.30am BST) in a residential area.

Police spokesman Willem Migom said several people have been injured and emergency services are still searching for other victims.

Antwerp's mayor Bart De Wever has tweeted to say there was a gas explosion.

He said: "Wilrijk was startled this afternoon by a terrible gas explosion.

"Our thanks go to the emergency services that are currently busy with rescue and rescue.

"An investigation will follow.

"Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. Antwerp will offer them every support."

Firefighters say there are several people still unaccounted for and they are using sniffer dogs to hunt for those in the rubble.

They are also using hoses to spray a "curtain of water" over the area to keep dust at bay and allow the rescue operation to continue.

The Fire Department of Antwerp tweeted: "All emergency services are en masse on site for explosion, Wilrijk.

"We were already able to free one person, probably other people under the rubble.

"Keep the area free for assistance."

HLN in Belgium said neighbours are reporting that work was being carried out at one of the affected homes, although this is yet to be confirmed.

They also reported hearing a loud bang and many neighbouring windows were also shattered.

A nearby school has also been evacuated following the explosion after some of the windows were shattered.

Youngsters from the Johannesschool were taken to another building further from the site.
